About Rungwe Nature Forest Reserve

Located in the Mbeya Region of southwestern Tanzania, Rungwe Nature Forest Reserve covers an area dominated by the Rungwe volcanic massif and surrounding highlands, including Mt. Rungwe with an elevation of approximately 2,960 meters. The reserve protects dense montane and submontane rainforest ecosystems characterized by high biodiversity with numerous endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna. The forest reserve is an important water catchment area providing streams and waterfalls feeding into larger river systems such as the Kiwira and Mbaka. It has a cool, moist climate due to its elevation and frequent rainfall, supporting unique habitats for birds like the endangered Rungwe Apalis and mammals including various primates and elephant shrews. Historically established in the 1940s to protect water resources and biodiversity, the reserve today offers opportunities for eco-tourism such as hiking across volcanic peaks, bird watching, and exploring waterfalls like Ngozi Crater Lake and the Suma Falls. Its volcanic landscapes, dense cloud forest, and wildlife make it a compelling destination for both scientists and outdoor adventurers. The reserve is increasingly important for conservation amid pressures from agriculture and deforestation in adjacent areas, underlining its role in preserving the region’s natural heritage.
